Daan is primarily a practice aimed at achieving Mukti, or freedom from the cycle of birth, death and rebirth. It is a practice that a person performs as an attempt to assist the souls of their ancestors in achieving deliverance from what can be described as the Hindu equivalent of Purgatory. Performing this practice in certain places on certain dates is believed to help the ancestors to move permanently to the final plane of the World.
